Creating gardens, both great and small, has afforded countless pleasure to millions of people over the centuries. Throughout this period horticultural fashion has changed many times, but the need to provide form, function and a philosophy has remained a constant requirement to achieve a successful garden. Our design work is often called on to reflect this long association with the garden, when the full potential of a period home is to be realised by introducing an appropriate setting.

Certain properties have important historic connections, or may once have had elaborate gardens, which have since fallen into neglect. If you feel that your gardens are worth preserving as an historic example, or as a site of special interest then we would recommend you contact us about our Garden Restoration Service. With a thorough site survey and following extensive research, we will produce accurate drawings from which the garden can be returned to its former glory. All materials and plants can be chosen to correspond to that of the required period, to create a feeling of unity with the rest of the property.

Example: The Penitents Maze

This was a popular feature in medieval gardens at the time of the crusades, traditionally it took 1 1/2 hours to manoeuvre as this was the length of time that it took Christ to reach Calvary and the centre was known as Jerusalem.  As a penance for a wrong doing you were expected to traverse the maze on your knees.
