Holly was thought to be a corruption of
holy. Legend has it that holly was given red berries as a
result of the time when Joseph wanted firewood to burn to
keep the infant Jesus warm. All the trees refused to allow
themselves to be used as kindling, except the holly, which
was happy to oblige. As a reward, the tree was given green
leaves all year round and berries as red as the fire it
provided. |

The custom of placing holly
wreaths on front doors dates back to AD601 when Augustine of Canterbury
was told by Pope Gregory to encourage parishioners to decorate their
churches with evergreens - a symbol of permanence.
