Soil testing across the whole site to establish the pH, texture and nutrient levels of your existing soil.

Recording areas of light and shade and how they change throughout the seasons.

A full flora inventory, marking the positions of existing plants and trees that you wish to keep.

Establishing any change of levels and position of underground or overhead pipes/cables.

Measurement of all structural items including window heights, walls and fences, positions of existing items that cannot be moved, e.g. inspection chambers, oil tanks etc.

Position of Microclimates - dry areas, frost pockets, prevailing wind and heights of water table.

The measured information is then used to draw up a scale plan of the site, and this plan becomes the basis for all future work. It has to be accurate, otherwise it would jeopardize any future plans by seriously distorting the eventual layout and probably inflating the cost of the garden unnecessarily.
