September Birthday Plant

Aster 'King George' - Michaelmas daisy

Also known as Starwort and probably grown since Roman times and important right up to the 17th century. They became known as Michaelmas daisies after 1752 when Pope Gregory's revised calendar was adopted causing Michaelmas Day, 29th September to fall 11 days earlier, coinciding with flowering time.

Very popular with Gertrude Jekyll who had whole borders of them for Autumn colour.
