The
chrysanthemum probably originated in China, being
cultivated there long before 500 BC. They were thought to
bestow long life and the dew from their leaves was
collected and drunk. The personal emblem of the Mikado
1000 years ago, it was exported to Japan about AD800 and
then to Holland in the late 17th century. A few varieties
reached Britain in 1790 causing tremendous excitement.
Known as a florist flower, the first Chrysanthemum society
was formed in 1846 and society formation spread as
enthusiasm increased. By 1859 every cottage had at least
some chrysanthemum and almost all London gardens were full
of them. |
