French lavender/Spanish lavender. Grown
in England since mid 16th century. Aromatic foliage and
flowers. Daytime scent used by Greeks, Romans and Arabs in
ancient times as antiseptic and toiletry herb. Was
actually used as antiseptic for swabbing wounds in World
War I. Many think that silver Mediterranean plants are
ideal for drought but it depends on the British weather as
it does not like heavy frost or winter wet so not always
hardy. Clip off flowers but only prune back in the Spring not
in the Autumn. Possibly introduced by Romans as growing in
Mediterranean but some believe it originated in India. In
medieval times a shirt washed in lavender water would
supposedly be free of lice as long as the scent persisted.
As an arometherapy oil it is used to relax. |
