Honey spurge. Also known as Euphorbia
longifolia. Originated in Madiera and one of the largest
species to be grown outdoors in England where it is only
successful in sheltered warm gardens, although resistant
to wind. Milky sap may cause blisters on hot days and this
was used in the past to remove warts and moles and became
known as Molewort. Plants listed in the Doctrine of
Signatures based their curative properties on whether a
plant looked like parts of the body or diseases;
euphorbias bear fruit that look like warts or moles. In
modern times people have believed this to mean that
Euphorbias would help remove the animal variety of mole
rather than disfigurements. Flowers are borne on stems
alternate years.
